Seventh annual Mutt Derby to attract hundreds of dogs and their owners
Plans are being made for one of the most amusing pet events on the Treasure Coast — the seventh annual Mutt Derby, organized by The Fur Seasons and presented by Seacoast National Bank. Grouped by weight, the event highlight is watching dogs race down a track toward their owners. It’s all in fun and for a charitable cause: to raise funds for the shelter animals at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC). The Mutt Derby will take place 8:15 a.m.-noon, Sat., March 29, at The Fur Seasons, a luxury dog and cat boarding facility and pet spa, 1310 SW Treasure Coast Commerce Way, in Stuart. Admission is free.
For a $10 donation, pet owners can register their dogs now by going online to http://www.thefurseasonsresort.com. Pre-registration is preferred. On site registration begins at 8:15 a.m. on event day. All breeds and sizes may compete. Each Derby entrant receives a certificate for participating and winners will receive prize ribbons. In its first six years, the event has raised more than $46,000. Last year, the event raised $11,350 for the HSTC.
The event also includes a silent auction, a substantial raffle prize, pet education sessions, a dive/swim event and pet-related vendors. The HSTC will bring adoptable pets for people to meet and a DJ provides music. For the past five years, John Moschitta, Jr. — once credited in “The Guinness Book of World Records” as the World’s Fastest Talker — has called the races and presented the winners with their ribbons. He returns again this year, bringing his sense of humor and fundraising skills as well as his dedication to the welfare of animals. Proceeds from the races, the raffle and the silent auction benefit the HSTC.
