World Information Tracking has been putting out a list of The 50 Shows That Changed TV. They chose ONE SHOW for every year from 1963 to 2012 . . . and the shows weren't just from the U.S.
The list is being released in parts . . . and yesterday, they released the SECOND batch, which covers the '80s and '90s. Here are the American ones:
Here is the List From 1983-1999
1983: "The Thorn Birds"
1987: "The Bold and the Beautiful"
1989: "The Simpsons"
1991: "Rugrats"
1992: "The Real World"
1993: "Beavis & Butthead"
1994: "Friends"
1997: "Survivor" . . . The original Swedish version. The American version didn't launch Jeff Probst's career until three years later.
1998: "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" . . . This is the original British version. The American one with Regis Philbinpremiered the following year.
1999: "Big Brother" . . . The original Dutch version. The American one premiered the following year.
